Why is Microtherm® the best thermal insulation available?
Microtherm® microporous insulation is the world's leading high temperature thermal insulation and has been for more than forty years. It is also the most versatile insulation right down to very cold temperatures.
Although Microtherm® is around 90% air and very low in density, the air is in pockets so small that they are smaller in size than the mean free path of an air molecule. This virtually eliminates heat transfer through gaseous conduction.
Microtherm® is made up of chemically bonded chains of very small silica particles, each only a few nanometers in size. This dramatically reduces heat transfer due to solid conduction.
Contained within Microtherm® are particles of opacifier which repeatedly refract penetrating infra red radiation. This virtually eliminates heat transfer through radiation.
The result of this is Microtherm® insulation products offer the lowest thermal conductivity over a wide temperature range – an even lower TC than that of still air! It will out-perform other insulation materials from the deep cold of cryogenic temperatures right up to continuous exposure at 1000 °C (1830 °F) – or even higher with Microtherm® Super A. At these temperatures our products are dimensionally stable and will not deteriorate with time. They are impervious to thermal shock and to vibration in use.
At ambient and low temperature, Microtherm® SlimVac is the best performing insulation product. Microtherm® block remains stable and unaffected by exposure to deep cold.
For passive fire protection applications, Microtherm® flexible insulation systems are the lightest and most compact available.

Why is Microtherm® such good value for money?
Microtherm® is the world’s leading high performance thermal insulation. At high temperatures it out performs most alternative insulation materials by a factor of at least 3 - 4. It is equally impressive at medium and low temperatures – even down to cryogenic. This means that the thickness of Microtherm® required in an application is proportionally that much less. The savings come in size and weight and simplified design of assemblies. Also in reduced materials storage and cheaper logistics of supply.
Initially, Microtherm® might seem expensive when compared only by basic purchase price with conventional insulation materials.
